Ways to practice gratitude
1. Keep a Gratitude Journal
One of the most effective ways to practice gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal. Each day, write down three things you are grateful for. They can be simple things, like a warm cup of coffee in the morning or a kind word from a friend. This is one of my favourite ways to practice gratitude. I love to make this more challenging by trying to come up with new things each day over a month. This forces me to focus on the positive aspects of my life, rather than just repeating the same things each day.
2. Express Gratitude Toward Others
Expressing gratitude towards others is another effective way to cultivate a gratitude practice. Take time each day to thank someone in your life for something they have done for you. It can be as simple as thanking a coworker for their help on a project or expressing appreciation to a loved one for their support. Add to this by doing something nice to show that you are grateful. This could include a post-it note on their desk, making loved ones an extra nice dinner, or buying them their favourite chocolate. It doesn’t have to be expensive.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment. Practicing mindfulness can help us develop a greater sense of gratitude by allowing us to appreciate the small moments in our lives. Take time each day to focus on your breath and the present moment, from the food you eat to your daily commute. What can you be grateful for in the present moment?
There are numerous other ways to practice gratitude. You could create a gratitude jar, practice positive affirmations, reflect before bed, set reminders, or go for a gratitude walk for example. Whatever way you decide to practice gratitude, remember to make it fun for you, and keep it simple. Gratitude should bring joy and should not be a chore to practice. Ultimately it can be a powerful way to improve your quality of life. Small moments of gratitude each day can add up positively.
